The main objective of the course is to develop critical and methodological competence in analysing and contextualizing focal points of American cultural history. It will start out from a theoretical orientation (New Historicism) and then investigate crucial moments of crisis and change in an exemplary way: the Salem Witch Trial, Indian wars, slave rebellions, and the assassination of J. F. Kennedy. The group projects and class discussions will concentrate on the multilevel complexity of "historical truth“ by analysing and comparing fictional and expository texts, films, documentaries, and other materials.
Reading of the texts and viewing of the films in class; participation in class discussion and group projects, a 12-page paper in English and a 2-3-page handout; presentation of paper in class; two appointments with the course leader. Course materials will be provided.
