Canada’s Aboriginal Societies since the Time of Contact

This course will examine important Native issues in Canada since the Time of Contact up until the end of the 20th century. Topics will include an examination of Indian warfare, economic, cultural, religious and political development and structures of the Canadian Amerindians, relations with the European newcomers, Native-federal government relations, and contemporary issues such as residential schools, Aboriginal claims, and Aboriginal self-government and self-determination.
Upon completion of this course, students will develop a better understanding of Aboriginal societies, their history, cultures, and values, as well as the contemporary Native issues and their historical and legal basis. The students will also develop their critical thinking skills and will be able to understand better the Amerindian influence on the development of Canada.
WEEK 1: Natives and Newcomers- Cultural Impact and Origins of Canada
WEEK 2: Indians and the Colonial Wars
WEEK 3: Government-Aboriginal Relations in Canada after the Seven Years’ War
WEEK 4: Native Residential Schools and the New Indian Act of 1951
WEEK 5: Aboriginal-Federal Canadian Contemporary Land Conflicts
WEEK 6: Aboriginal Rights, Nation, Identity, and Sovereignty: A Clash of Different Visions
WEEK 7: Native Women, Their Organizations and Bill C-31
WEEK 8: Traditional Native Models of Justice, Education, and Environment
Two courses a week, presentation by the course instructor and discussion with the students
Final Exam
The University Library and the Canadian Studies Centre house a huge collection of relevant literature.
