This introductory course aims at providing an overview of the historical development of the English language, from its beginnings as the Germanic vernacular spoken in Britain by a hundred and fifty thousand people to its present status as the world’s lingua franca, spoken and understood by more than two billion people.
Topics to be discussed include the genetic classification of languages (English as an Indo-European language, English and German), Old English, Middle English, Early Modern English, Modern English, the spread of English, English today.
