In this course, students will learn about how second languages are learned (and sometimes not learned). We will begin by briefly discussing native language acquisition. We will then go on to compare what is known about native language acquisition with our understanding of second language development. Different theories will be presented. We will also look at individual learner differences. Finally, we will conclude by saying what the implications of our understanding are for learning and teaching second languages.
