The primary objective of the proseminar is to develop competence in analyzing aspects of the American identity discourse. The course will start out from a theoretical orientation and then investigate the following focal points in detail: In the last two decades a global mass culture has reached every corner of the world with its flow of commodities, images and (digital) information. At the same time this process of global homogenization is being met by a counterwave, redefining the problematic interdependence between the global and the local. In the US regional, local, and ecological endeavors are thriving today. The PS will investigate crucial issues and new perspectives on the basis of texts and audiovisual material. The course has been conceived for students between the 4th and 6th semesters.
Reading of texts and viewing of films in class; participation in class discussions and group projects, a 12-page paper in English and a 3-page handout, presentation of paper in class (20 minutes), two appointments with the course leader.
Oral and written (midterm and final tests)
