In 2004, Shane Carruth produced the Science Fiction thriller _Primer_. It won two awards at the Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for the Independent Spirit Award. It cost only $ 7.000 to be made. So-called Guerilla filmmakers like Shane Carruth, Robert Rodriguez, or the young Darren Aronofsky and Christopher Nolan have proved that a film can be made for the price of a used car. And it can still be a financial or critical success - or pave the director's way to Hollywood. How can it be done? How did they do it? Could you do it? Every professional film production is different, especially with regard to budget. But they all follow the same basic pattern. Guerilla filmmakers demonstrate how a film can be made with a minimum of (financial) effort. In this course we will analyze how a film comes into being, step by step, from the idea to the big screen. A keen interest in film is a major asset for attending this course.

Lecture inputs, presentations, group discussions, interviews with film professionals

Active class participation, student presentations, term paper of 10-15 pages

Films: _Pi_ (Darren Aronofsky, 1996), _Following_ (Christopher Nolan, 1998), _Primer_ (Shane Carruth, 2004). Books and articles will be provided by the lecturer.
