To get an insight into American cultural values; to understand cultural texts and develop the ability to express oneself about such phenomena, i. e. to develop debating and presentation skills on cultural topics from a transcultural perspective.

The proseminar deals with the general topic of "Looking at America: inside and outside perceptions": American values as they are seen and defined by Americans and as they are seen - critically - by the outside world, which, of course, also touches upon anti-Americanism.

Text-based discussions (students have to read short texts for every session so they have a basis for discussions); short student presentations; short inputs by the lecturer.
