This course aims at establishing a deeper understanding for the role of the news media in the United States. It examines the concept of a free press and the relationship between the media, the government, and public interest. Apart from historical and socio-cultural considerations, legal and ethical problems concerning the news business will also be identified and discussed. Furthermore, the course addresses questions about the nature of news, changing technologies, and globalization in the news media. Possible topics range from First Amendment rights to spin-doctoring and from embedded journalists to news parodies.

Active class participation, reading and writing assignments, presentation, term paper (ca. 5000 words)
