The course aims at familiarizing students with the legal sources, methods and institutions of international and European criminal law. These two bodies of law have become increasingly important over the last twenty years. At the same time, they are highly dynamic fields which give rise to a lot of fascinating questions - but also serious problems.

In the first part of the course, we shall start with a brief sketch of the history of international criminal law. Subsequently, we shall study the most important institutions in the field: above all, the International Criminal Court, but also its predecessors and companions, i.e. the ad hoc international criminal tribunals for Ex-Yugloslavia and Rwanda as well as the hybrid criminal tribunals for Sierra Leone, Cambodia, Kosovo, East Timor and, most recently, Lebanon. We shall also look into the crimes falling within the jurisdiction of these courts and the procedural rules applied by them. In a second part, we shall deal with European criminal law, the way it developed and it presents itself today. This includes analysing the pertinent legal bases in the EU Treaties and an introduction into the most important instances of Union legislation in the field.

LFU Online registration is necessary to be admitted to the course. Registration will be possible from February 1st on. The number of students participating in the course is limited.
