This course will explore the interrelationship between the individual and society. We begin by looking at the notion of the individual through a social rather than naturalist lens. We examine the stakes of too much individualism versus too much social influence. The course then splits into two halves. The first develops several analytical perspectives on the social constitution of an individual’s self, i.e. their identity. The second provides a cultural perspective on society and the cultural dimensions underpinning social structure. We conclude by tying the two halves together and outlining the ways in which we are cultured individuals.
