English Usage and/or Applied Linguistics: Focus on Pragmatics

The course will offer a survey oft he major trends and issues in pragmatics, at both the micro- and the macro- levels, starting from the ‚classic‘ accounts of speech act theory and conversation analysis, to arrive to the most recent developments of formal, interactional, intercultural, and diachronic pragmatics. The main theories that have tried to explain the use of language as a means of action and interaction will be discussed and reviewed, and th emain areas of research described and exemplified. Readings from the main textbook will be indicated for each session, and further materials for specific topics will be indicated for the final exam. Students will be required to take a written exam in multiple format (multiple choice items, short answer- questions and open questions). Main textbook: Huang, Yan Pragmatics .
