Computational linguistics is a fascinating interdisciplinary field which investigates and construes natural language with the help of computers. It originated in the United States in the 1950s when scientists (unsuccessfully) attempted to have computers translate texts from Russian into English. Current fields of research other than machine translation include computer aided corpus linguistics, speech generation as well as speech recognition. In this course, we will also look at several other areas in which computers may be helpful for linguistics, e.g. electronic dictionaries (like Joseph Wright's English Dialect Dictionary online, which is currently being compiled by a team of Innsbruck scholars), electronic databases and the Internet as a resource for linguists. Modern linguistics would arguably be inconceivable without the use of computers, and you will also get an idea of what still lies ahead of us. Course requirements: regular attendance, active participation, oral presentation, written paper, final exam.
