Systemic and/or Applied English Linguistics: Contrasting English and German

This proseminar will focus on the similarities and differences between English and German. The course will take both a synchronic approach, looking at contrasts on the levels of lexis, phonology and grammar today, and investigate the historical drifting apart of the two languages.

Topics will include: case marking and word order; tense and aspect differences and their communicative implications; interference: borrowing & imposition; lexical specificity vs. generality; the historical role of and attitude toward borrowing; contrastive phonology; phoneticity and orthography; politeness markers and modal particles.

Course requirements: regular attendance, active participation, oral presentation, term paper.
