Present-Day and Historical English: Discourse Markers in the History of English

This seminar aims at increasing the participants‘ knowledge of t he way in which pragmatic markers and discourse particles are used in English. After a theoretical discussion of the processes of pragmaticalisation and subjectification, a number of developments in the use of interjections, commentary adverbs, and discourse markers (ranging from Oh! to indeed to possibly or well) will be examined, focussing on the transition from referential uses of some items to their employment as pragmatic markers. Participants will be required to carry out descriptive and analytical case studies of one or of a subset of such markers, exemplifying their different uses throughout their documented history, including possible recent developments in specific varieties of English. The assessment for this seminar will also be based on individual presentations and on the submission of a seminar paper on the case-study chosen by the student.
