British and/or Postcolonial Literature: What-if Scenarios: Movements and Trends in Speculative Literature

In this course on “speculative literature” we will study works of English (incl. Canadian) literature with an emphasis on literary form and theme. We will disambiguate a very broad definition of the term to delimit the boundaries between science fiction, social science fiction, cyberpunk, fantasy literature, magical realism and alternate histories. Rather than using “speculative literature” as an overly broad umbrella term for these genres or as a highbrow term for science fiction only, we will work out a definition applicable to literature that depicts “what-if-scenarios” in a near or distant future to make readers rethink their own world – a world that is or has turned out to be very similar to the one described in the literary text.
