This course intends to raise students’ awareness of the revolutionary potential and the actual social impact of early African-British counter-discourse.
This course traces the development of African writing in Britain and its colonies. Early African-British writing will be shown to have contributed to the success of the British Abolitionist Movement as well as to have been instrumental in reinventing African people’s identity. By writing about their experiences as slaves (and freemen), African-British authors challenged the tenets of contemporary colonial society, made their own voices heard and virtually wrote themselves into being. These texts, however, did not only have an impact on the social and cultural matrices of the 18th and 19th centuries, but have influenced African-British writing well into our century; in order to illustrate the lasting significance of early African-British counter-discourse, this course will also include the discussion of more recent texts.
