The representation of cannibalism in fiction is both a horrifying and at the same time fascinating issue that is deeply rooted in Western culture. Where does our image of the cannibal come from and how is it re-imagined in film and fiction? This course will look at the portrayal of cannibalism in selected films and literary works, analyze its deep structure, and set it in a tradition of its discursive development. Film and literary works discussed will include Thomas Harris’ _The Silence of the Lambs_ and _Hannibal_, both as novel and film, Peter Greenaway’s _The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover_ as well as literary examples of the 19th century like Herman Melville’s _Typee_ and contemporary fiction like Cormac McCarthy’s _The Road_.
