American Literature: Effective Presentations on Topics of American Literature

The course provides students with information on the structural and rhetorical aspects of a presentation, aiming for an ideal information transfer from presenter to audience. This includes a detailed discussion of the main parts of a presentation (introduction – main part – conclusion) as well as various rhetorical strategies. The use of PowerPoint will be examined with an emphasis on staying the center of attention as a presenter, and solutions to common problems in slide design will be offered. Furthermore, important aspects of body language, such as eye contact, bodily movements and positioning are discussed. The course consists of input, practical exercises and presentations by students.

Grades will be based on active class participation and an oral presentation on a topic of American literature, which is also to be handed in as a PowerPoint document. Students receive elaborate feedback on their presentations.
