The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the basic tools of historical inquiry, research, writing, and analysis. We will do this by focusing on a particular theme in American history: chattel slavery. Alongside the published work of historians, we will delve into archival collections of primary sources from the colonial era through the 1930s. We will explore the craft of history both by using primary sources ourselves and by studying how historians use those sources for their own research and writing. As all historians working in the twenty-first century must do, we will familiarize ourselves with the research methods necessary in order to use digitized, archival, and published documents.
Active class participation, student presentations, reading and writing assignments, research paper
