This course investigates the role of divine messengers in cultural history by paying special attention to angels in mainstream film. We will analyze passages from the Bible, ancient encyclopedic texts, medieval philosophy and Baroque epics, as well as trace pictorial representations of angelic creatures in the visual arts. The main emphasis of the course is on filmic examples: _The Kid_, Charles Chaplin, USA 1921 _Liliom_, Fritz Lang, France 1934 _Heaven Can Wait_, Alexander Hall, USA 1941 + Remake: W. Beatty, Buck Henry, USA 1977 _It’s a Wonderful Life_, Frank Capra, USA 1947 _Orphée_, Jean Cocteau, France 1949 _Teorema_, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Italy 1968 _Der Himmel über Berlin_ / Les ailes du désir, Wim Wenders, Germany/France 1987 _Always_, Steven Spielberg, USA 1989 _Angel Heart_, Alan Parker, USA/Canada 1987 _Michael_, Nora Ephron, USA 1996 _City of Angels_, Brad Silberling, USA 1997 _Dogma_, Kevin Smith, USA 1999 _Angels in America_, Mike Nichols, USA, TV-series 2003 _Up in the Air_, Jason Reitman, USA 2009
Course requirements are: independent screening of all films discussed in class, active class participation, a presentation, final test, 20-page research paper.
