The aim of this semester course is to equip students linguistically with the necessary knowledge and ability required to function sucessfully in an English speaking scientific business and "everyday" enviroment. The course aims to build motivation and self-confidence in using English and therfore helps PHD students develop accuracy and fluency in their spoken English use. It will help them develop their English skills so that they are more capable to persuade, argue, negotiate, evaluate and criticize using the Englisch language within scientific context.
The course will comprise 30 UE and will likely consist of 10 meetings throughout the semester. During each session students will engage in a mixture of listening, speaking and written activities. Out-of-class activities will encourage students to immerse themselves in the English language.
Students will work on an individual learning project that has them identify their strenghts and weaknesses and develop an action plan to improve in chosen areas. Furthermore, a reading project based on a self-selected, scientifically-relevant book will parallel the course and include short group discussions and presentations.
