The course will discuss and attempt to demonstrate what ›good scientific writing‹ actually means.
Scientific communication occurs principally through written documents. The course will therefore discuss and attempt to demonstrate what ›good scientific writing‹ actually means.
To begin with, every participant will provide an example of an outstanding text in his / her own academic discipline. The class as a whole will then try to answer two questions based on such a text: First, what are the criteria of ›good scientific writing‹? Second, is a given criterion specific to the scientific discipline and text type, or is it a generalized feature common to all kinds of scientific texts and subjects? Following this, text types commonly used in scientific publishing and discourse will be collected and analysed with the aim of compiling a table of stylistic rules related to text types and scientific subjects. In conclusion to the course, text writing will be exercised on issues chosen by participants.
