Communicate fundamental concepts of seismic hazard analysis and prediction of structural response, for the purpose of assessment of economic losses and collapse safety of buildings subjected to earthquakes. Implementation in several case studies that illustrate the application of concepts in engineering practice.
Synthesis and application of new approaches to performance-based earthquake engineering, with an emphasis on quantitative decision-making based on life-cycle considerations. Probabilistic seismic hazard analysis and representation of ground motions. Modeling of structural components for nonlinear response history analysis of structural systems. Modeling of deterioration and prediction of collapse. Damage and loss assessment for structural and nonstructural systems.
Powerpoint lectures and in-class discussions. Extensive reading assignments. Practicing of concepts in several problem sets.
Graded problem sets and a comprehensive final written examination.
Comprehensive class notes and topical publications.
