The aim of this lecture is to familiarise students with key concepts of theoretical, critical and methodological approaches to British and postcolonial literary studies.

Introduction to British and Postcolonial Literary Studies introduces you to the wide field of English and Postcolonial Literatures. The course will discuss issues of literary theory, different schools of literary criticism, and the literary genres. The main aim is to make you familiar with the basic tools as well as critical concepts in literary scholarship used for the interpretation of literary texts. This will enable you to scrutinise, compare, and contextualise a variety of text types from a wide range of different historical and cultural sites. The course offers detailed discussion of works by British and Irish authors (William Shakespeare, William Blake, Charlotte Bronte, Joseph Conrad, James Joyce, Brian Friel,...) as well as internationally renowned African, Caribbean, and Australian authors, including Chinua Achebe, J.M. Coetzee, Jean Rhys, Kate Grenville, and many more.
