In this course we will concern ourselves with issues related to what is often referred to as the “spatial turn” in cultural studies and in the social sciences. Through an analysis of literary texts that discuss relations between place and (cultural, social, ethnic) identity, relations between space and gender, relations between public places and private spaces, or relations between real and imagined places, we will deal with questions of how we are defined by the spaces in which we locate – or are, in fact, denied to locate ourselves and of how such spaces are produced and reproduced.
