American Literature: Contextualizing the Reading List

This course is meant to focus on individual literary writers and their texts in the context of cultural and political movements and thereby to provide an understanding of the coherence of the development of American literature.

The course will provide a survey of the development of American literature from the beginnings to the present. It will focus on the literary genres of the novel, the short story, poetry, and drama, as well as on literary movements, historical backgrounds, and cultural aspects. The requirement for BA students and for LA students (1. Studienabschnitt) is a written paper, its presentation in class, as well as participation in the discussions. The requirement for LA and Diplom students (2. Studienabschnitt) is a presentation in class and participation in discussions.
