To gain insight into the major literary movements of American literature at the beginning of the 20th century.
Eclectic, radical, revolutionary. Many terms serve to describe American literature at the dawn of the 20th century, a conflicting era in every sense of the word. The literature produced in the wake of various tumultuous events and periods such as World War I, the Roaring Twenties, the financial crisis or the Harlem Renaissance will be the focus of this course. The critical discussion and contextualization of works by e.g. F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Gertrude Stein, T.S. Eliot, Eugene O'Neill, and Langston Hughes is supposed to provide students with a more profound insight into the major literary themes of what Henry Luce once described as an "American century."
Introduction to the topic, discussion, presentation of papers
Active participation, term paper (10-15 pages), presentation of papers in class
