The aim of this course is to familiarize the students with key texts of postmodernist theory and to analyze selected primary works that exhibit emblematic postmodernist traits.

Academic (as well as non-academic) discussion of postmodernism has determined various characteristics that are typical for postmodernist art. These features include formal fragmentation, a tendency toward a particular kind of nostalgia, and the use of materials and styles borrowed from previous cultural artifacts. Works discussed will include (but are not limited to): Joseph Heller’s _Catch-22_, Bret Easton Ellis’s _American Psycho_, Spike Jonze’s _Being John Malkovich_, James McTeigue’s _V for Vendetta_, and Christopher Nolan’s _Inception_.

Lecture inputs, presentations, group discussions

Active class participation, student presentations, reading and writing assignments, term paper, optional exam

Course material and selected primary and secondary sources will be posted on e-campus
