to become familiar with the history and theory of genres as well as basic problems of intermediality; to develop and deepen critical reading and viewing skills in analyzing a variety of filmic genres in their historical and cultural contexts (ethnic, feminist, aesthetic, political, commercial, etc).
Diaries lure us with promises of the intimate and immediate. They offer a space where personal testimonies and explorations of the self unfold seemingly unperturbed by questions of form and social taboos. This course explores the deep connections between film and diary writing (non-fictional and fictional) in film history and movie productions of the last ten years. We will follow diaries across a variety of aesthetic movements and film genres such as early experimental cinema and autobiographical avant-garde films of the 1960s and 70s, classical drama and melodrama, mockumentary and experimental documentary, family and teen comedy, romantic comedy and tv dramedy, as well as indie drama, horror and sci-fi. Films in this course will include _Black Tape_ (2002), _Chain Camera_ (2001), _David Holzman's Diary_ (1967), _The Diary of Anne Frank_ (1959 and 2009), _Diary of the Dead_ (2008), _Diary of a Lost Girl_ (1929), _Diary of a Wimpy Kid_ (2010), _Easy A_ (2010), _Man with a Movie Camera_ (1929), _Secret Diary of a Call Girl_ (2009), _Walden_ (1970).
