This film studies proseminar will concentrate on the Italian-American Martin Scorsese but will also touch on his contemporaries (such as Francis F. Coppola, George Lucas, Steven Spielberg) and the development of the American film industry and techniques in filmmaking during his lifetime.
Scorsese is a film director, producer, actor, screenwriter, who has made feature films on historical and modern topics using genres like action films, thrillers, literary adaptations, sports films and musicals. He has directed documentaries on pop culture figures, on other personalities, on the blues, on the history of American cinema and on his travels to Europe. He has acted cameo roles in his own and other films and launched the careers of many stars. He has produced his own films, TV series and other filmmakers' films. He has written the screenplays for his own films and a few others. Reactions to his work range between rave and flop; it's difficult to be neutral about him.
We will try to get to the bottom of his personality, his creativity and his work, and we will investigate his impact on independent as well as Hollywood filmmaking. Choosing from the wide range of posssibilities, we will discuss, closely analyze, and critically assess one film per week.
