English
As a basic introduction to English and American Studies, this course has essentially two specific aims: 1) to provide an outline of the discipline and the subjects central to English and American Studies and 2) to familiarize students with the research tools and skills they will need to meet the requirements and the standards expected in the course of their studies. More specifically, the course offers an outline of the main fields within the discipline and summarizes major developments, trends, paradigm shifts, and current research areas. Students will then be familiarized with specific academic working skills essential for students of English and American Studies, which inlcudes the effective use of library catalogues, databases, bibliographical indices, and online resources. Morover, requirements for written and spoken assigments generally expected from students will be discussed (particularly writing research papers, presenting, and discussion leading).
