American Literature and Culture: Memory in Film and Literature

This course focuses on the function of memory and memory loss in different media and text types.

A selection of Hollywood films and non-US productions together with pertinent literary texts will form the basis for analysis. Treatises on memory in philosophy, cultural studies and rhetoric provide the theoretical framework for the discussions of literary and cinematic "texts" in the course. Readings and viewings include: Plato, _Phaidon and Symposion_, Sophocles, _Oedipus Rex_, Alfred Hitchcock, _Vertigo_, Kurt Vonnegut, _Slaughterhouse-Five_, Margaret Atwood, _The Handmaid's Tale_, Christopher Nolan,_ Memento_ (2000).

Course requirements include: active class participation, a presentation, and a 15-20 page research paper. Students are encouraged to enlist for research topics and presentations prior to the seminar.
