“We no longer live in a world for which conventional risk-management textbooks prepare us. No forecasting model predicted the impact of the current economic crisis, and its consequences continue to take establishment economists and business academics by surprise.” Taleb, Glodstein and Spitznagel in Harvard Business Review, October 2009, made this statement in the midst of the financial crisis. It highlights the fall of conventional risk management and the rise of new ways to address the risks firms now faces. In this class, we will take a look at risk management from a Bayesian view and implement instruments applicable to measure the risk firm’s faces in the current business environment. Methods such as Robert S. Kaplan’s Risk Indicator Scorecard as well as the three-level hierarchy of risk will be used. The students will leave this class with the latest instrument of corporate risk management used today and with knowledge on how to implement and interpret them.

The grade is divided between a case study and final exam. Class participation and involvement in discussions are always favorable.
