Doctoral students are supposed to develop a research proposal for their doctoral thesis. This course will enhance your skills of establishing a theoretical framework for doing empirical research concerning your research questions, of determining defendable methods for treating these questions and of developing theoretical contributions from qualitative research. The course will give you the opportunity to develop a research proposal and to defend that proposal for training purposes. By the end of the course you will have evaluated various potential theoretical and methodological approaches to find answers to your research questions, developed a research proposal, and presented and defended the proposal to the class audience.

How to develop a research proposal in deductive and in inductive research, from the research problem to the selection of substantive theories, selection of research method(s) and empirical design

This course provides you with ample opportunities for active learning. It is based on the idea of involved, explorative learning in an open class environment. It deploys a mixture of individual preparation work, short lectures, presentations, group work, and discussions. The instructor sees himself as learning coach and mentor, rather than as lecturer.

Overall grading will be based on the following assessments: 1 individual presentation (cognitive interest, research questions, theoretical basis and methods) 25% 1 individual research proposal (presentation and defence) 25% 1 written elaboration of research proposal (5 pages) 30% Class participation 20% Passing the course requires a positive evaluation of each of the assignments. Please hand in the written research proposal on the day of class.
