The purpose of the seminar is to introduce Austrian students to the environmental history of Modern S.Asia; the fluidity, contestations and debates that have marked the histories of caste, gender and labour relations; and the role played by these histories in the making of S.Asia/India during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

The eighteenth century witnessed far reaching economic, social, cultural and political transformations in South Asia. British colonial rule, established between the mid-eighteenth and mid-nineteenth centuries had to contend with this rapidly changing—not static--dynamic historical landscape, unleashing in turn, new twists, turns, responses, reactions, critiques, rebellions and protests. This was the context for momentous changes in the history of the environment in South Asia/India, and for the emergence of popular socio-political movements raising issues of livelihood and the environment. This was also the context in which debates arose and new challenges from below came to be posed to caste, class and gender hierarchies. The Seminar course hopes to encourage students to explore the histories of the environment and environmental movements, of caste, class and gender in nineteenth and twentieth century India/South Asia.

The papers are to be submitted by the end of September.
