Learning Outcome:

Understanding the fundamentals of the law of the United Nations (UN).

Contents:

Historical development of the UN, institutional structure of the UN, UN peacekeeping mechanisms (peaceful settlement, UN Security Council sanctions under Ch. VII UNC, inclusion of regional entities, four generations of peacekeeping), case law of the International Court of Justice, discussions about reform, current developments regarding the UN, management of crises.

Methods:

Case studies, discussion of problem questions

Assessment:

The evaluation is based on a final written exam and regular active participation.

No previous knowledge required, thus open for beginners.
