The students acquire the competence to apply methods of social sciences in concrete case studies. - The introductory seminar course (PS) “Applied Methods of Social Sciences” serves, in accordance with the seminar on the same topic, to train and apply empirical methods. By means of a practical case students handle on their own all phases of a research process: formulation of the research question, survey and analysis of data, elaboration of a research report (Curriculum, §5).

The course focusses on the topis of houeshold food purchase and use. Various qualitative and quantitative Methods are applied and combined. Household records are developed and implemented as well as analysed. These records together with the results of focus group discussions with consumers build the base for the development of a quantitative questionnaire.
