Students will learn to apply methods of investigation for specific sociological research questions. In the introductory seminar (PS) “Applied Methods of Social Sciences” students will learn, in accordance with the lecture on the same topic, to apply different empirical methods. All phases of the research process will be exemplarily conducted: formulation of a research question and developing a research method, field research, analysis of data, and presentation of first results in a short report (Curriculum, §5).
The gender-specific division of labor within families and couples is one of the current issues of the sociology of the family. Why do women and men differ in their perception who is doing what kind of homework tasks and how much homework? This question could be analyzed using different designs: for example the method of observation or standardized questionnaire. Potentialities, similarities, and differences between the methods of investigation can be elaborated in class by comparing the experiences made in the field. Manuscripts, questionnaires, videos will be used as an introduction into different methods of investigation.
