The issues being addressed in this seminar will concentrate on cultural and sociological aspects of the game of football. This will include the theory and praxis of the sport as well. The seminar will examine how these aspects (culture, sociology, theory and practice) have changed during the transition from a ‘modern’ era to a ‘post-modern’ one. Is it still possible to speak of (imagined) national football cultures in the context of a globalised, post-modern game and can they be distinguished from one another? If so, how does one imagine them? How are symbolic points of connectivity, cultural, social and political, and common conceptions being created, which bring together global and local manifestations and allow for links to be made back to national constructs? To what extent does the microcosm of football mirror social developments?
