Interlingual Mediation

Students shall be introduced to the challenging and fascinating activity of translating different types of texts from English into German.

In this course we will look at various practical aspects of interlingual mediation between English and German, dealing with texts ranging from from literature and film to cookbooks, travel brochures, instruction manuals, newspaper articles and magazine stories.

We will analyse translations produced by professional translators as well as produce our own German versions of short passages taken from authentic texts. Students are invited to make their own suggestions regarding texts they would like to analyse or translate in class.

Weekly assignments, written final exam.

A select bibliography will be handed out at the beginning of term.
