This proseminar will focus on the analysis of text resources from different linguistic perspectives, such as the morphological, sociolinguistic and also the historical perspective. Another important objective of the proseminar will be the pragmatic analysis of texts, including humour and (linguistic) politeness. In this latter, relatively recent approach, a branch of linguistics primarily concerned with spoken language (pragmatics) is applied to written language, raising new research questions.
Some of the topics this course will deal with are:
- The development of terms of address in the history of the English language
- Linguistic discrimination and sexism
- What is linguistic politeness and how is it analysed in written texts?
These and other research questions will be at the centre of our investigation.
Students will be introduced to methodologies of corpus linguistics and independently analyse and evaluate text data from different sources. The course aims at developing the analytic skills of the participants and at raising awareness of the complexity of evaluating written documents.
Requirements for positive assessment are: Regular attendance; presence at the first session, in particular, is mandatory. The final assessment will also be based on individual oral presentations (with handout), a research paper related to the presentation (style sheet for linguistics available on the departmental website), active participation in discussions, regular reporting on research progress, language proficiency and a final exam.
