The aim of the seminar is to provide an introduction to the relationship between language and cognition.
While more traditional approaches usually describe language without any consideration of the cognitive abilities and needs of the language user, cognitive linguistics holds that our linguistic behaviour is intrinsically linked to and determined by other human cognitive abilities such as perception, memory, and reasoning. This seminar will provide an overview of the most central issues in cognitive-linguistic theory: How is linguistic knowledge stored and organized? How do our experiences of the world influence the way in which we categorize and conceptualize it? And what can specific linguistic construals chosen to convey a given content at a certain occasion tell us about on-going reasoning processes? Topics to be discussed in detail will include categorization, cognitive models, conceptual structure, figurative language, conceptual blending and cognitive-linguistic approaches to syntax.
Discussion, critical evaluation and application of cognitive-linguistic theories and methods
