The aim of this seminar will be to view some of the major cinematic productions which have emerged from Australia in recent decades. The country has developed a cinema industry which is second to none and the result has been movies of great variety, many of which have been major international successes. We shall concern ourselves solely with those movies which have been adapted from short stories, novels or plays and shall be thinking about the principles and methods of adaptation which have been applied in each case..
If time permits we shall discuss the following titles: Picnic at Hanging Rock (Peter Weir, 1975) based on a short story by Joan Lindsay; The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith (Fred Schepisi, 1978) based on the novel by Thomas Keneally; My Brilliant Career (Gillian Armstrong, 1979) based on the novel by Miles Franklin; The Year of Living Dangerously (Peter Weir, 1982) based on the novel by Chris Koch; Breaker Morant (Bruce Beresford, 1980) based on the play by Kenneth Ross; Blackfellas (James Ricketson, 1993) based on Day of the Dog by Archie Weller; Hotel Sorrento (Richard Franklin, 1995) based on the play by Hannie Raysom; Cosí (Mark Joffe, 1996) based on the play by Louis Nowra; Oscar and Lucinda (Gillian Armstrong, 1998) based on the novel by Peter Carey; and Rabbit-Proof Fence (Phillip Noyce, 2002) based on the book by Doris Pilkington /Nugi Garimara.
