To enhance and extend students’ language awareness and to improve their text-writing skills. The aim is not to train students to produce professional translations but to deepen their awareness of some basic differences (and, of course, similarities) between English and German.
Translation of authentic German texts from German into English; interlingual textwork; analysis and comparison of parallel texts (e.g. newspaper articles in both languages dealing with the same problem/topic/issue). Tense and aspect, modals and conditionals, reported speech, word order; strategies for translating culture-specific elements in texts; false friends, collocations etc.
Translations of texts are produced in class and at home (regular assignments); in-depth discussions of texts in class.
