The main aims are to introduce basic editing and proofreading skills while polishing up language skills to C2+ level. In editing skills, the main aim is to analyse and produce texts focussed on a clear thesis statement pervading the whole text whose main idea and supporting arguments and evidence are presented in clearly-demarcated paragraphs, each with its main idea, topic sentence and supporting evidence (arguments, statistics, quotations, etc.). The relevance of content to the thesis statement and the avoidance of repetition are major content-related aims. Attention is also paid to the logical organisation of content (structural flow), coherence, cohesion and cotext (clear referencing) in paragraphs and the entire text. For proofreading skills students are introduced to and should become familiar with the main proofreading symbols - both the symbols of the British Standards Authority as well as being aware of their coexistence alongside other lists of symbols. This introduction to proofreading skills and symbols aims primarily at sharpening students' awareness of writing skills and especially paying close attention to detail i.e. basic grammar, spelling and punctuation in both British, US and other varieties. An awareness of regional and socio-dialects is also promoted.
A wide variety of original and contemporary texts from students' essays and papers to advertisements, letters, mails and academic papers.
Intensive in-class study editing and proofreading various text types with an eye to content
(appropriacy, relevance, clarity etc.), structural and linguistic flow, tone/register and layout. Introduction to and application of major proofreading symbols in perfecting texts for grammatical accuracy, lexical appropriacy and style with regard to typographical and technical aspects.
Attendance at the first course session is obligatory.
Final written exam and course assessment.
Will be dicussed in class.
