Introduction to the History of English

This course aims at giving students an overview of the main changes that have occurred in the development of the English language since the beginning of its documented history up to the present day. This concerns both external history (i.e. political and cultural developments that have had an impact on language) and internal history (i.e. changes in the actual inventory of forms and grammatical outlook of the language).

At the end of the course, students will be familiar with the main periods in the history of English, the most significant events, and the major changes that affected the language during the centuries, including their reverberation on the present.
