The aim of this seminar is to give participants the opportunity to revise their knowledge of current studies in European pragmatics and to apply some approaches and methods to text samples, in the direction of developing independent research skills and methodological reflections applied to actual language samples.

Revision of: Gricean pragmatics, politeness theory, Conversation Analysis, impoliteness, speech act theory. Selection of individual samples and application of this range of theories to texts, discussion of research progress, including methodological quesitons, and results.

Guided revision of theories, groups readings, presentation of research progress, discussion on individual samples.

Examination mode/Prüfunsmodus: Students are required to attend regularly; presence at the first session, in particular, is mandatory. Other requirements for positive assessment are: language proficiency adequate to the 2nd Abschnitt level, active participation in discussions, regular reporting on research progress, a 20-min presentation (with handout) and a written research paper (stylesheet for linguistics available on Institute’s website.
