In this course we will be taking a tour through the sounds, words and styles of modern British music, observing various genres and their respective landmarks as regards their cultural and social significance.
After a series of initial input sessions intended to familiarise you with relevant cultural theories and institutions of modern British music, we will depart from mainstream phenomena such as the Beatles and Britpop to survey the fertile “underground” of Prog-Rock, Electronica, Indie, Punk, and Metal music. Going along the dialectic of subcultural subversion and commercial incorporation we will focus in the latter part of the seminar on why Grindcore makes people feel “chuffed”, how Industrial negotiates posthuman ethics, and what circuit bending has to offer against instrumental rationality, while simultaneously always being at the verge of commoditisation.
Inn-class presentations and a term paper.
A selective bibliography will be provided in the first session. As for a preliminary perusal, Dick Hebdige’s Subculture: The Meaning of Style is more than recommended.
