The lecture is to convey an understanding of the history of indigenous peoples in English-speaking countries since colonisation and basic knowledge of literary and other cultural expressions of this history.
In any attempt to come to terms with the culture of the post-colonial world, the role of indigenous people is of paramount importance. Their suffering at the hands of European conquerors and of subsequent colonial and post-independence governments has remained an issue of social and political concern and has recently sometimes led to apologies for past abuses on the part of present administrations, for example in Canada and Australia. In recent years the renewed emergence of indigenous cultures has become a major field of interest in postcolonial studies. In this series of lectures I propose to provide some account of the historical plight and current situation of indigenous peoples in selected Commonwealth countries and against that background to look at some of the literary and cultural manifestations through which they have sought to revitalize their culture, to preserve their identity and to assert their rights. I shall focus particularly on Aboriginal Australians, the First Nations people of Canada and the Māori of New Zealand. I shall also look at the much less well-known case of the Adivasi of India.
