In this course we shall be looking at a selection of seminal essays which have determined our thinking on post-colonial issues, literary and social.
Although we shall of course include work by significant theorists of post-colonialism such as Edward Said and Gayatri Spivak, we shall focus particularly on essays by a range of major writers such as Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o (Kenya), Derek Walcott (St Lucia), Chinua Achebe (Nigeria), Salman Rushdie (India), and Abdulrazak Gurnah (Tanzania), who have made significant contributions to our understanding of the post-colonial world, its literature and culture. The exact essay titles will be made known nearer the time and texts will be made available.
